Road system left to deteriorate: AG

ST. JOHN’S — The Rock’s provincial government has let road conditions lapse for over a decade, according to the province’s auditor general.

According to The Telegram, John Noseworthy said a review in ’96 indicated the province wasn’t sufficiently managing the road system or fixing bumpy highways , and 10 years later there is still no improvement.

There is no formal program to assess the 9,000 km of paved road, and 2,000 km of gravel roads in the province.

Furthermore, Noseworthy added, actual amounts spent on the system were “significantly less than the amount contained in the annual budget.”
Noseworthy said the province simply has to do some planning.

In its response to the concerns, the Telegram reports. the Department of Transportation and Works said it has restored the road maintenance and construction budget to a level that addresses priorities “over a reasonable period of time.”
