Sagging auto, electronics production drag down June shipments

OTTAWA (August 16, 2001) — Declines in motor vehicle and electronics production dragged down manufacturing shipments by 1.9% in June, erasing the increase observed in May, Statistics Canada reported today.

The agency’s monthly survey of manufacturing said June is the third monthly decrease in 2001, compounds the declining trend in manufacturing shipments that started in the fall of last year.

Shipments in the first six months of 2001 decreased 2.1% compared to last year. Finished-product inventories rose for the fourth time in six months, gaining 0.1% in June.

The complete report, which details a variety of manufacturing sectors, is available at the Statistics Canada web site.
