Sarnia truck restriction proposal passes

SARNIA, Ont. — A controversial bylaw to ban heavy trucks from a series of country roads in Sarnia, Ont. is moving along as planned.

A group of pro-business councillors made an attempt to cancel Bylaw 39, or at least get it delayed, but that motion was defeated.
The bill passed by a vote of 19-13 and will go to committee level for further consideration in November, reports the Sarnia Observer.

According to the report, the bylaw restricts commercial trucks on portions of Indian, Confederation and London Road in the border town.

At Mayor Mike Bradley’s request, special consideration is also being given to Lakeshore Road — from Rawlings Rd. to Mandaumin Rd. — where residents complain that truck congestion is becoming a safety hazard.

Only local pickups and deliveries would be allowed.

The county hopes the OPP will enforce its new bylaw once it has passed.
