Sask trailer maker closes plant
SASKATOON — Saskatchewan bulk trailer manufacturer Doepker Industries is shuttering its Saskatoon production facility by the end of November.
According to the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, poor economic conditions in the trucking industry led to the closure. The plant has already slashed capacity and will continue to operate with a skeleton crew until its remaining contract is complete.
President Gurcan Kocdag said the writing was on the wall this past spring, when about 50 workers were given temporary layoff notices.
Overall, though, the economy and manufacturing sector is robust in Saskatchewan.
The company plans to continue operations in Annaheim and Moose Jaw, where it makes grain haulers.
Meanwhile, Doepker will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Business Hall of Fame on Saturday.
