Sask truckers issue wake-up call on drowsy drivers
SASKATOON — Saskatchewan trucking companies and the provincially-run insurer have launched an awareness campaign to combat drowsy driving among truck drivers.
Last year in Saskatchewan, reports the Saskatchewan Trucking Association, driver drowsiness and fatigue were cited as a factor in 272 collisions resulting in 155 injuries and seven fatalities.
It’s why drowsy driving is the focus of one of two safety messages being displayed on the sides of a 53-foot semi trailer being driven across the province to raise awareness of the issue.
The other side of the trailer features a pro-seatbelt safety message.
The trailer will be used on a regular basis over the next year. It can be seen travelling down many Saskatchewan roads and highways during STA truck driver training courses.
