Saskatchewan seeks input on shipper liability enforcement, education
REGINA (April 17, 2002) — Saskatchewan Dept. of Highways and Transportation officials are developing a program to educate trucking companies and their customers about new shipper liability regulations in the province.
Feb. 15 marked the effective proclamation date to section 37 (13) of
The Highways and Transportation Act, 1997, which makes a consignor and carrier jointly liable for overweight vehicle violations when the consignor knowingly causes an overload situation.
On April 1, the department began developing and implementing education and enforcement strategies. It said it wants to identify various shippers and/or consignors that use trucking companies so it can provide timely information and updates.
