Seaway opens for 49th season

CORNWALL, Ont. — The St. Lawrence Seaway is open for business as the CSL Tadoussac vessel set sail through Lock 3 of the Welland Canal.

While the opening date is the earliest ever, some cargo shippers were wishing the H2O highway would have been accessible a few weeks ago when a CN strike and fuel shortage in Ontario crippled businesses and transport providers.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the fourth Welland Canal, which opened in 1932, and the Seaway’s 49th shipping season.

Ontario Minister of Transportation Donna Cansfield told onlookers in St. Catherines Ont. that the government is looking for ways to encourage more shipping on the Seaway.

About 40 million tonnes of cargo is shipped through the Great Lakes annually. But Cansfield said transport services on those waters are about 50 percent below capacity.
