Serge Ménard to succeed Chevrette as Quebec Transport Minister

QUEBEC CITY, Que. (Jan. 30) — Serge Ménard, former Quebec Minister of Public Safety, has been appointed by the Parti Quebecois to succeed Guy Chevrette as the government’s transportation minister, Transport Routier is reporting.

Chevrette and Natural Resources Minister Jacques Brassard announced they resigned their cabinet posts during a joint press conference yesterday. Both party veterans were expected to be dropped in today’s cabinet reshuffle anyway. It is believed the party is searching for a more youthful image. Recent comments in which Chevrette revealed he refused a bribe years ago, but did not report the incident to the police, have also annoyed party leaders.

Menard, who represents Laval-des-Rapides, is also a lawyer, and has worked as a prosecutor, criminal lawyer, and law professor. He also served as Minister of Public Security before being appointed Public Safety Minister in 1996.
