SIRIUS Canada unveils satellite lineup; will be available this year

TORONTO — SIRIUS Canada today announced its leading channel lineup for its subscription satellite radio service in Canada.

SIRIUS — which is teaming up with a Canadian consortium that includes the CBC — says its lineup of 100 commercial-free music, sports, news talk, and entertainments channels provides the most comprehensive satellite radio service in the country.

radio listeners have programming choice

Canadians will be able to experience SIRIUS in time for the holidays, says Mark Redmond, president and CEO of SIRIUS Canada. “As the fastest growing satellite radio provider in North America, SIRIUS will have the greatest depth and variety of any satellite radio company in Canada,” he added.

After years of petitions, the CRTC finally approved pay-radio satellite services in June.

Under the CRTC rules, the American-Canadian partnerships (SIRIUS-CBC; and XM Radio-Canadian Satellite Radio) must dedicate at least 25 per cent of the music lineup to Canadian artists. The companies must also contribute five percent of gross revenues to initiatives for developing Canadian talent.

The all-Canadian group of CHUM and Astral — promoting a heavy-Canadian lineup — said the CRTC’s restrictions didn’t go far enough. The bidder said at the time it was disappointed with the slice of the Canadian market the CRTC handed to foreign competitors.

The Sirius satellite radio service will be available soon at Future Shop, Best Buy, The Source by Circuit City, Canadian Tire, and many other leading retailers. The premium subscription service will be priced at $14.99 a month.

Pretty much every musical genre is represented in the service. A wide-variety of hockey games will also be broadcasted nightly. And Canadian sports fans looking for a little more coverage beyond the hockey rink will get to hear loads of NFL and NBA coverage.

Whatever your politics, the service has you covered too. Listen to a wide variety of news, analysis, and personalities in both Canada and the US.
