Stepping up to ECF-1

Caterpillar
In deciding not to pursue exhaust gas recirculation to control emissions, Caterpillar cited concerns about the high sulfated ash content some oils need to handle EGR engines. During testing, the company found piston deposits in Cat engines lubricated with oils that containing high levels of ash. Not good.

So the engine maker created ECF-1. It’s a standard developed to ensure that lubes used in Caterpillar’s engines meet a variety of benchmarks on ash content in addition to meeting API CI-4 and other standards. The ECF-1 standards was created specifically to ensure that engines equipped with ACERT emission controls perform as expected.

Among the product that comply with ECF-1: Castrol Enduron S, Tection Extra, and Tection S oils; Chevron Delo, Chevron RPM, Texaco Ursa Premium TDX, and Ursa Super Plus; Esso XD-3 Extra 15W-40, Mobil Delvac 1300 Super and Delvac 1; Kendall Oil Super-D 3; Petro-Canada Duron and Duron XL Synthetic Blend; and Shell Rotella T 15W-40 multigrade.
