Stop issuing new permits, Quebec union says
MONTREAL (Nov. 8, 1999) — A union representing Quebec truckers called on the province yesterday to stop issuing new trucking licences, the Canadian Press is reporting.
The Quebec Federation of Labour is requesting a moratorium on permits until issues that prompted owner-operators to shut down last month are resolved. The truckers were protesting for higher pay and to preserve aspects of regulation in the industry.
The provincial government is studying the state of the trucking industry and a report is expected next month.
