Strike by government workers stalls permits, IRP registrations at MTO

TORONTO (March 18, 2002) — Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation said it will not issue permits for overdimensional loads or process new vehicle registrations under the International Registration Plan until a strike by government workers is over.

Members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) went on strike March 13.

The MTO said existing IRP registrations that expire during the strike would be valid until the strike is over. In addition, the ministry said it has asked other jurisdictions to extend Ontario IRP credentials expiring on or after March 13, 2002, until further notice.

The government will place advertisements in major daily newspapers across the province, outlining services available during a strike. It has also established a toll-freeline for inquiries directed at any ministry. Updates on MTO service levels will be available through this phone line by calling 1-866/933-9233 in Toronto, the MTO said.

MTO’s INFO line at 1-800/268-4686 (416/235-4686 in Toronto) will provide limited recorded information during the strike.
