Striking grain inspectors return to work

WINNIPEG (Feb. 1) — Grain inspectors at the Port of Vancouver ended their strike Friday after three days and now are working to break the bottleneck of railcars waiting to be unloaded.

The walkout by 65 grain weighers resulted from a dispute over wages between the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) union and the federal government.

PSAC representatives said the workers returned reluctantly, but did so because of the hardships the strike was causing farmers on Canada’s Prairies. They warned that strikes could resume on short notice.

The Canadian Wheat Board asked the federal government on Thursday to legislate a settlement to the strike to protect Canadian farmers already hurt by low commodity prices.
