Surprise truck safety, HOS blitz on across Ontario

TORONTO — Starting tomorrow morning, Thurs. Sept. 13, at 6 a.m. Operation Corridor kicks-off in the GTA, the Ontario Provincial Police announced.

Operation Corridor is a 24 hour joint-forces initiative between the OPP, Ministry of Transportation, and Ministry of the Environment. Police will be targeting commercial vehicles across Hwy. 401 from Quebec to Windsor, and the Trans-Canada Hwy (Hwy 11/17) to Manitoba.

Officers will be focusing on truckers that are speeding, driving aggressively, tailgating, making unsafe lane changes, and use the left lane where prohibited.

A rented OPP aircraft will be used in enforcement. MTO officers will concentrate on pre-trip inspections, load security, mechanical safety, and driver fatigue through enforcing hours of work legislation.?
MOE officers will enforce the Environmental Protection Act. They’ll be on the lookout for polluting rigs and compliance with hazardous waste regulations.

At the Kennedy Rd. yard, there will be information on truck crashes, OPP ride-alongs, safety tips for car drivers on “sharing the road with trucks,” and truck inspections of unsafe vehicles.

The blitz was not previously announced. You’d think there was an election around the corner, or something.
