‘– Cancom Tracking (www.cancomtracking.com) will offer a robust fleet maintenance and vehicle condition reporting system with the Qualcomm OmniTRACS satellite messaging and tracking service. The maintenance program is Fleet Assistant, developed by Cetaris (www.cetaris.com), formerly Actco Systems, of Toronto. The Windows-based software has a wireless repair order module that uses mobile communications to transmit data about a vehicle’s condition on the fly to the shop so the technician can prep for service. Fleet Assistant was created in partnership with Freightliner LLC. Cetaris acquired full ownership of Fleet Assistant from Freightliner in 2001.

Cancom also will provide satellite communications for an onboard trip recorder from Traxis of Vancouver (www.traxis.ca). Traxis will be able to run its software on Qualcomm’s Windows CE-based MVPc computer, providing for paperless driver logs, geofencing, and mileage reports.

— While just about every fleet tracking system uses the satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) to provide location information, they differ in the way they transmit that information from the vehicle to a central site. Satellite, cellular, and general packet radio services (GPRS) networks each have their pros and cons.

WebTech Wireless (www.webtechwireless.com), a Vancouver developer of wireless vehicle tracking systems, says its WebTech Locator 4000 device will choose the standard that’s best for the situation-a GSM/GPRS network for typical use, a global satellite network for non-cellular areas, and GPS to power WebTech’s suite of wireless fleet services (tracking, navigation, messaging, telemetry, and J1708 reporting).

WebTech says the Locator 4000 will be available in June, and that it will be integrated with dispatch and fleet management software from Maddocks Systems.

— Cummins’s QuickServe Online Web site gives fleet and national account customers access to the same online system for parts and service information used by Cummins dealers and distributors worldwide.

Using an engine’s serial number, QuickServe Online (quickserve.cummins.com) can sort through eight million Cummins engines and a million documents to find current parts and service data about your specific engine.
