Temporary bridge could restore Hwy. 11 traffic within two weeks

LATCHFORD, Ont. (Jan. 20, 2003) — A collapsed portion of Hwy. 11 that spans the Montreal River in Northern Ontario could be restored within two weeks, Transportation Minister Norm Sterling announced.

The province plans to temporarily replace a section of the Sgt. Aubrey Cosens Memorial bridge with a single-lane structure known as a Bailey bridge. The collapse occurred last Tuesday near Latchford, Ont., about 135 kilometres north of North Bay near the Quebec border.

Detours include Hwy. 63 to Temiscaming, Que., and then north on Hwy. 101 through Quebec to Notre Dame du Nord which connects back to Hwy. 11 at New Liskeard. Motorists travelling north from Ottawa can take Hwy. 533 at Mattawa until it joins Hwy. 63.

Sterling has asked transport officials in Quebec to relax permit restrictions so truckers can use the detour.
