The Soo designates new city truck route

SAULT Ste. MARIE, Ont. — This northern Ontario city recently unveiled a new truck route perimeter that restricts commercial trucks from the city’s downtown core.

The new route encompasses mostly Great Northern Rd, Wellington E., to Carmen’s Way and north to Second Line E and Black Rd.

For a detailed outline of the truck route see the image (right), or click here for the official city document that lists all banned roads during certain times.

The driver of a truck with a destination outside the Core Area must not enter the Core Area and must reach his or her destination by the most direct and practicable route between the premises or location concerned and the nearest truck route outside the Core Area, the document states.

However, drivers will be allowed in the Core area if they are delivering or collecting goods or merchandise to or from, or providing services at the premises of bona fide customers; if they’re going to or from business premises of the owner of the
heavy truck concerned, or if traveling to or from premises for the servicing or repairing of the heavy truck.

Deviations from the requirements may be allowed from time to time by way of a permit issued by the Commissioner of Public Works and Transportation.
