Three’s a charm

COLUMBUS, Ind. (Aug. 26, 2002) – Cummins has announced it has
submitted its third EGR engine for Environmental Protection Agency certification, even before some engine OEs have submitted their first.

The heavy-duty, 11-litre ISM engine will be certified to EPA emission standards that were agreed to by engine manufacturers in 1998, and come into effect this Oct. 1.

In April Cummins’ ISX engine became the first to be certified to the standard, and its medium-duty ISB received certification two weeks ago.

The ISM, with horsepower ranging from 280 to 285, is targeted at short-haul trucking, vocational, and construction applications. Cummins also will offer a restricted 400-hp and 450-hp rating for the ISM, for motorcoach, recreational vehicle and fire applications.
