Tibbitt to Contwoyto ice road opens to half-weight loads

YELLOWKNIFE (Jan. 30, 2002) — Trucks started rolling down the Tibbett to Contwoyto ice road this week, but at 50% of the gross allowable vehicle weight of 125,000 pounds.

The ice road allows trucking companies to deliver supplies from Yellowknife to several mining camps — Diavik’s diamond mine site, BHP Billiton’s Ekati Mine, DeBeers Snap Lake site, and Echo Bay’s Lupin Mine.

About 30 inches of ice is needed before the road is safe to travel.

This year there are expected to be about 7500 loads on the road, according to Northern News Services. The road opened about a week earlier than last year.
