Tic-Tach-Slow: Manitoba fines tied to exact speed

WINNIPEG — Manitoba drivers’ should regard their speedometers and tachs just like they do their wallet.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, attorney general Andrew Swan says the government is changing the way it fines speeders beginning on Jan. 1.

Drivers will be charged $7.70 for every kilometre they go over the posted speed limit rather than the current system which requires drivers to pay set fines depending on the speed category they’re charged under.

Fines for "extreme" cases of speeding will still require a court appearance.

However, the definition of "extreme" is changing to anything over 100 kilcks an hour from the current threshold of120 km/h.
