Today’s Trucking contributor named Ontario Driver of the Year

Guy Broderick

TORONTO — Guy Broderick, a driver with Brampton, Ont.-based APPS Transport, is a tireless advocate for truck safety.

He starts every work day with a comprehensive pre-trip inspection around the Volvo truck he drives throughout southwestern Ontario. He takes immediate action when he has any mechanical concerns. He is meticulous about the hours-of-service paperwork. And he is relentlessly courteous on the road.

He has even written about his views in recent issues of Today’s Trucking and Highway Star magazines.

“Safety is always my number one priority,” he says. “I truly enjoy promoting safety initiatives and educating the public on how together, we can improve road safety.”

His dedication to safety has not only contributed to a flawless driving record and helped him win a spot on the 2009-2010 Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) Road Knight team, it has now earned him the distinguished honour of being the 2010 OTA/Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the Year.

OTA president David Bradley said Broderick was selected from an impressive pool of nominees. He received the award from Brent Weary of Volvo Trucks Canada at the OTA convention in Toronto on Friday.

Every year, this award is presented to an outstanding transport driver who has a collision-free driving record and exhibits professionalism both on and off the road. As part of this honour, he will receive a trophy and cash prize.

“Guy is an exemplary professional driver, both on and off the road,” said Bradley. “He should be proud of the numerous accomplishments that earned him this prestigious award.”

Broderick has driven almost three million collision-free kilometers throughout his 25 year career. He is also a member of the 2009-2010 Road Knight Team. As a Road Knight, Broderick is an ambassador of the trucking industry and educates the public on how to safely share the road with a truck. He also visits schools and career events to inform students of the exciting career opportunities available in the trucking industry.

In addition to his work as a driver and Road Knight, Broderick continually takes part in work-related training and shares his knowledge of safety with his peers. Broderick also works to raise the profile of the industry by contributing articles to trucking industry publications. He is an active member of his Cambridge community through his involvement as a softball coach and fundraiser for the MS Society of Canada and the CIBC Run for the Cure.
