Today’s Trucking & friends score huge at magazine awards
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Today’s Trucking and its sister magazines took home more journalism awards than any other single truck publication in North America last night.
Presented at the Truck Writers of North America (TWNA) Industry Awards Banquet at the Mid America Trucking Show last night, Newcom Business Media’s trucking publications were honored with a total of 17 awards in writing and multimedia categories. The magazines include Today’s Trucking and this website (9 awards); highwaySTAR (4 awards); and Transport Routier (4 awards).
Each and every Newcom editor won at least one award. Former highwaySTAR editor and current contributor Jim Park took home five awards for writing and his Truck Talk program on todaystrucking.com. Editorial Director Rolf Lockwood won four awards, as did Routier editor Steve Bouchard; Senior Editor Marco Beghetto and Steve MacLeod won two each for Today’s Trucking and highwaySTAR respectively; and Editor Peter Carter won a Gold for best editorial.
In total, the magazines won five Bronze awards, six Silvers, and six Golds.
The competition recognizes excellence in trucking industry journalism in both the trade and the mainstream press, as well as excellence in communication with the industry by public relations professionals. These included TWNA members and non-members.
Also, Tom Berg of Heavy-Duty Trucking and truck writing veteran extraordinaire was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Meanwhile, Heavy Duty Trucking, which has an editorial affiliation with Today’s Trucking, has captured the 2009 Grand Neal Award-the highest honor in business journalism.
The magazine won for its special theme issue, Fuel Crisis Survival, published in June 2008 as trucking struggled with sky-high fuel prices.
Editorial Director Deborah Whistler, Executive Editor Steve Sturgess, Managing Editor Deborah Lockridge, Washington Editor Oliver Patton, Senior Equipment Editor Tom Berg, Contributing Editors Jim Park and Bette Garber, Technology Editor Jim Beach and Creative Director Susan Overstreet, were all named as recipients.
