Top Atlantic truckers picked for national drive-off

MASSTOWN, N.S. — Atlantic Canada’s best truck jockeys were chosen at the provincial truck driving championships in Nova Scotia and are getting ready to represent the East at the national championships in Regina this September.

RST Industries won the team award at the Atlantic event, in which more than 75 drivers competed for a chance to become part of Team Atlantic.

Individual winner are as follows:

Leonard (Sandy) Cooke of Armour Transportation Systems won the two-axle competition, with Roy Mattinson of Roy Mattinson & Sons Trucking in the runner up.

Herb Peters of Day & Ross Transportation Group was named the winner in the four-axle category, followed by Jeff Wilkins of Clarke Road Transport.

In the five-axle group, Lee Armstrong of Eassons Transport took home the top honor, while Victor Poirier of Armour Transportation Systems came in second. Bison Transport’s Tony Bond, who finished third in this category, was also named Rookie of the Year.

Jerry Thibideau of Irving Oil Ltd., won the b-train competition, followed by Maurice Calhoun of RST Industries Ltd.

Adrian Glew and Kevin Bannister, both of Midland Transportation, and Glen Fisher of Tim Hortons, were given professionalism awards.
