Toyota mulls GM offer for auto parts e-commerce

TOKYO (Dec. 27, 1999) — Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp. is considering a tie-up with US auto giant General Motors Corp. on procurement of auto parts via the Internet, a business daily said Thursday.

GM buys auto parts worth $80 billion annually and if Toyota joins hand with the U.S. automaker, it would create the biggest Net-based procurement program in the world, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.

The auto giant has bought a stake in a US online trade support provider and plans to set up its own site for the procurement of auto parts in March next year, the daily said.
