Trans-Canada open again through flooded town

ST. JOHN’S — Two lanes of the Trans-Canada near Gambo re-opened yesterday afternoon.

Heavy weekend rains and floods in central Newfoundland flooded the highway. Fearing a landslide, work crews worked feverishly to get the highway stabilized and fill-in sink holes caused by water.

A 12-meter deep pool of rainwater sat on the highway above the small town.

A dozen or so families in Gambo were evacuated for the second time in as many weeks. Flooding on July 29 also forced residents out of their homes.

Until last night, travelers were rerouted around Gander Bay via Highway 320, adding nearly three hours to their trip.
