‘Trash is treasure’ for truckers: Judge
HALIFAX — The Nova Scotia Supreme Court threw out a law banning truckers from hauling trash outside of Halifax.
According to the Halifax Chronicle Herald, Justice Ted Scanlan ruled Halifax Regional Municipality can’t monopolize waste disposal.
“One person’s trash really can be another person’s treasure,” Justice Scanlan wrote in his 32-page decision. “While Nova Scotia, like the rest of the world, suffers under the burden of too much trash, for Halifax Regional Municipality there is not enough treasure to go around.”
The city charges about $115 per ton to commercial companies to unload their garbage in the Otter Lake landfill outside Halifax, while landfills outside the municipality offer fees of $50 to $80 per ton.
The city can’t lower the tipping fee because it’s about halfway through a four-year contract with the company that operates the landfill.
