Truck sales slump ‘leveling out’: Volvo

STOCKHOLM (June 19, 2001) — Volvo Global Trucks said deliveries of new trucks fell 11% to 68,738 units from January through May, compared with 77,202 units in the same period a year ago.

Volvo Global trucks comprises Mack Trucks, Renault V.I., and Volvo Trucks.

Order intake in the period was down 14% over all, but 30% in North America, compared with the same period a year earlier. Orders in Europe were off 10%.

“The decline in the North American market now appears to be leveling out. We are feeling some effects in the European markets, but we do not expect the situation here to be as grave as in North America,” said Tryggve Sthen, president and chief executive of Volvo Global Trucks.

In Europe, Volvo Global Trucks deliveries rose just 1% on the year in January through May to 44,216 units.

North American truck deliveries fell 39% on the year to 16,475 units for the first five months of 2001.
