Trucker saves man from burning car
CALEDON — The fire extinguisher was running dry and time was running out for an Ontario motorist who was trapped inside his burning car.
So truck driver Mel Farnell of Shelbourne, Ont. smashed the window and pulled the man to safety.
The driver – who was not identified in initial police reports – was rushed to hospital where he is expected to recover.
His Chevrolet Cavalier collided head-on with the tractor-trailer driven by Farnell on Hwy. 9, near the Town of Caledon, Ont., in the early hours of Friday morning.
The accident could have had a tragic outcome without Farnell’s quick action. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to douse the flames but the electronic fuel pump kept feeding the fire.
When the fire extinguisher was just about empty, he knew he had to just get the semi-conscious driver out of the car. The door was jambed, so he pulled on the window, which was down a couple inches, until it broke.
Police are saying Farnell may be recommended for a commendation, for prevented further injuries and very likely saving the driver’s life.
