Truckers in Europe, Africa, and Latin America plan protests against longer driving hours

LONDON, England (Oct. 5, 1999) — Truckers in Europe, Latin America, and Africa planned protests today to raise awareness of the dangers of driver fatigue, the London-based International Transport Workers’ Federation said yesterday.

Federation officials said drivers planned to demonstrate at border crossings and ports in 11 European, five Latin American and eight African states. The organization includes 500 transport unions in 120 countries and represents five million workers, of which 1.5 million are involved in trucking.

Specifically, the group said it wants to limit the working week for drivers to 48 hours.
