Trucker’s life blows past his eyes

BROCKVILLE, Ont. — Ontario’s wind storm Wednesday nearly sent a truck driver plummeting to his death as he tried to cross the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge.

According to a report in the Brockville Recorder and Times, severe gusts of wind toppled the U.S.-bound tractor-trailer, which then burst through the bridge’s guardrail.

The back end of the van was left dangling over the St. Lawrence River, but with some help from passing motorists, the 66-year-old driver, Robin Bell, managed to climb out, the newspaper reports.

The Quebec-based trucker didn’t have any major injuries, but was “in a state of shock,” according to police at the scene.

As the wind steadily picked up throughout the day, police feared the tractor-trailer could fall off the bridge into the river. However, the unit was later pulled up and towed away without incident.
