Two carriers tie for national fleet safety award

TORONTO (Nov. 18, 1999) — The Royal & SunAlliance National Fleet Safety Awards were handed out at the OTA annual convention today in Toronto, with Trimac Transportation Services and TST Overland Express sharing top honors in the over 18 million fleet miles category.

Both fleets were chosen for their numerous and varied safety initiatives in their respective areas of expertise. The other finalist in the 18 million + category was United Parcel Service.

First place in the 3-to-18-million mile category was Calgary-based Canadian Freightways. CF was recognized for involving its drivers extensively in the company safety initiatives and for demonstrating leadership in various industry safety activities. A finalist in the 3-to-18 million category was Cavalier Transportation Services Inc.

Steve Hammond of Royal & SunAlliance presented the awards. Judging was done by Derek Sweet, director of road safety programs, Transport Canada, Sherry Khan, president of QRC & Associates, and Les Johansen, partner, KPMG. The award process was administered by KPMG.
