Uncle Sam wants Freightliner
The U.S. army has awarded Freightliner LLC a seven-year, $400 million contract to build about 3,400 military vehicles.
Freightliner will provide the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) with M91 5A3 line haul tractors, M91 6A3 light equipment transporters and M91 7A2 dump trucks, which will all start being produced next year. Freightliner, which has been supplying the U.S. army with military vehicles since 1989, will also provide training, logistics provisioning support and interactive electronic technical manuals.
The new vehicles will be spec’ed with Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines, Allison World Transmissions, anti-lock brakes, Eaton-VORAD collision warning systems, tilt/adjustable steering columns, air conditioning and TufTrac heavy-duty suspensions.
Freightliner president Jim Hebe said the trucks are optimized for uptime, low maintenance and safety, and will be supported by a worldwide network of freightliner and Mercedes-Benz dealers.
