Union Pacific, GM extend rail contract

OMAHA, Neb. (Dec. 27, 1999) — Union Pacific Railroad and General Motors Corp. have extended their automobile transport agreement for five more years.

In a press release, Union Pacific said the contract is for automobile transport from Eastern and Midwestern assembly plans to auto distribution centres west of the Mississippi River.

The contract also calls for Union Pacific to develop “fast-to-market” services for General Motors, operate vehicle distribution centers and increase its fleet of multilevel auto cars.

To meet GM’s anticipated volume growth, Union Pacific will buy 250 multilevel auto cars in 2000, bringing its fleet of auto cars dedicated to GM to 6000.
