UPS gears up for ‘peak week’

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Who says the pre-Christmas peak shipping season is a thing of the past?

UPS Canada is gearing up for its busiest week of the year – five pressure-packed days known throughout the company as ‘Peak Week.’

From Monday Dec. 20 through Friday, Dec. 24, the Canadian parcel company expects to deliver 278 packages every second. The single busiest day of the year is expected to be Wednesday, Dec. 22 when about 24 million packages will be delivered worldwide in the last-minute Christmas rush.

That’s nearly 60 percent more than normal daily delivery volumes.

To meet its delivery targets, UPS added about 50,000 seasonal workers in its facilities, and will employ a ground fleet of more than 100,000 package cars, vans, motorcycles and tractors, including more than 1,940 alternative fuel vehicles.

Dec. 22 will also be the company’s highest traffic day for online tracking requests. More than 44 million package tracking requests are expected to be generated that day.

Globally, UPS will deliver approximately 430 million packages in the month before Christmas.
