U.S. outlines security tips for hazmat carriers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 2, 2001) — Field officials with the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will visit hazardous materials carriers in the coming months in order to increase the level of awareness of hazmat carriers to terrorist threats.

The agency stressed that the visits will not result in a compliance review or enforcement action. Instead, inspectors will offer tips on personal security, cargo securement, en route security, communications, and readjustment plans based on current conditions.

Customs and FMCSA officials are concerned that hazardous cargo could be used in chemical warfare or as explosive devices, and have warned carriers to expect increased scrutiny.
