U.S. safety committee likes sound of speed limiter tune
WASHINGTON — The Executive Board of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) voted unanimously to support a petition to require speed governors to be set at no more than 68 mph on trucks weighing more than 26,000 pounds.
According to a GHSA newsletter, the action occurred at its spring board meeting in Washington, D.C.

Last year, the American Trucking Association followed in the steps of Canada’s largest carriers and endorsed a plan that would require all trucks speeds capped at 68 mph through the vehicle engine’s ECM.
The Ontario Trucking Association first fashioned the plan in 2005 and has been lobbying for adoption in each Canadian province through the Canadian Trucking Alliance. So far, Ontario and Quebec both have bills in the legislature that would require some form of speed control for heavy trucks.
In January, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the American petition was open for public comment until March 27.
GHSA is the nonprofit association representing the highway safety offices of all states and territories. Its members are appointed by their Governors to administer federal and state highway safety funds and implement state highway safety plans.
