Weather dampens speed limiter protest plans

TORONTO — A protest against speed limiter legislation in Toronto today has been cancelled.

A group of owner-operators planned to form a convoy from Ayr, Ont. to Queen’s Park to show their displeasure with Ontario’s rule requiring all trucks operating in the province to set their engine speed no faster than 105 km/h.

But today’s major snowstorm blanketing southern Ontario seems to have dampened those plans. Organizers don’t want to make traveling worse for motorists than it already is.

"Safety is our first concern," organizer Scott Mooney said. "We wish the Ontario government was equally concerned with safety risks associated with the speed-limiter law they intend to roll out next month."

About 170 people had signed up to participate on an anti-speed limiter Facebook page.
