Work begins on Hwy 401 twinning project
TORONTO — A 15-km stretch on Highway 401 near Woodstock, Ont. is being widened.
The $104-million construction project includes widening the highway from four to six lanes from east of Oxford Road to east of Drumbo Road; installing a median barrier and paving shoulders; repairing several area bridges; improving the Drumbo Road interchange; and building emergency access roads at Oxford Road 22.
Only two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction for the majority of the construction work. Some of the work will require traffic to be reduced to a single-lane at night. Short-term ramp closures will also be required at the Drumbo Road interchange, the Ministry of Transportation warns.
Once complete — likely in 2011 — Hwy. 401 will have six lanes from London to Toronto.
