Yellow names new transport unit boss

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — LTL giant YRC Worldwide has named Phil Gaines president of its Yellow Transportation unit, and Ken Bowman senior vice president of finance.

Gaines began his career with YRC in 1989 as a staff accountant and has since served in a variety of roles. He will report to Mike Smid, chief executive officer of YRC North American Transportation.

Gaines fills the position formerly held by Smid, who was promoted into his new post March 31.

Bowman has experience in both Yellow Transportation and the former Roadway division.

The company, one of the largest transport providers in the world, has been particularly battered by a depressed U.S. economy, falling freight volumes, and skyrocketing fuel prices and costs.
